Normal Public Library Community Room
You are invited to participate in a Professional Networking Workshop on Stormwater Education and Outreach for Phase II Communities
Friday, April 13, 2007
8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Illinois Wesleyan University’s Memorial Center Bloomington , IL
Communities in Central Illinois are implementing NPDES Phase II Stormwater Plans which include public education, outreach and involvement components. Because environmental education and social marketing techniques are often outside the professional realm of the engineers assigned to these tasks, and because of the time and money needed for effective program strategies, many of these communities are struggling with the design and development of public education and outreach programs. Our contact with the municipalities in this region has indicated a clear need for assistance in bringing together their potential local partners, facilitating collaboration, and encouraging effective approaches to community watershed and stormwater education.
Professional Networking Workshop
This workshop is designed to facilitate sharing of information, ideas, and experiences in developing stormwater education and outreach programs, and to encourage collaboration with colleagues and community partners in creating more effective programs in Central Illinois. People who should attend include government officials, planners, watershed managers, environmental education organizations and other community groups who could partner with municipalities in creating education and outreach programs. Spend the morning learning which stormwater education and outreach programs are working in other communities, meet with those who have developed successful solutions to educating citizens about stormwater, and discover partnership opportunities with others working on watershed issues in your community. Some of our scheduled presenters include Mike Hall from the Town of Normal, Kurt Haas from the City of Bloomington, University of Illinois Extension Educators, Al Keller from Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Shannon Allen from Macon County Soil and Water Conservation District, and a Prairie Rivers presentation on creating a community rain garden program. Each presentation will be followed by questions and group discussion. A final session will break into groups by county, so that municipalities and their local organizations can make direct contacts and initiate collaborative efforts.
Keynote Luncheon Presentation
The workshops will be followed by a lunch keynote at noon, and an opportunity to spend the afternoon visiting exhibits at the free Illinois Sustainable Living and Wellness Expo or holding your own discussion groups in our reserved room. The tentatively scheduled keynote presenter is Mary Rehwald who serves on the Ashland Wisconsin City Council and is adjunct professor at Northland College, Ashland where she directed the Lifelong Learning Center for 15 years. Mary traveled to Sweden in 2004 to tour and study sustainable communities and has developed slide shows from what she learned. She has made over 25 presentations in 4 states on sustainability.
