Rain Barrels and Organic Fertilizer for Sale this year at ISLWE

This year at the Illinois Sustainable Living and Wellness Expo, the Ecology Action Center will be selling rain barrels and organic fertilizer! Come to the EAC booth at the expo to find out about all the different benefits of these products. Both of these products are available on site at the expo, or are available for pick-up at a later date.

Prairie Rain Harvester Rain Barrels can dramatically decrease the amount of water you use, especially in the warm summer months. These 55 gallon barrels are made from a locally sourced food grade barrel, include a threaded faucet and soaker hoses for gardens, have mesh mosquito/debris screens, and can be installed in less than an hour. You can use these to water your garden, water your indoor plants, wash your pets, and wash your car. Rain Barrels also greatly reduce stormwater runoff contamination. Water that is not absorbed into the ground can become contaminated by chemicals or fertilizers and end up in our county's drinking water. By conserving this falling water into a barrel, you can reduce the amount of water that comes into contact with harmful chemicals!

The cost of these Rain Barrels is $ 95.00. However, with an EAC Member Discount, it is only $ 80.00! If you're not already a member of the Ecology Action Center, now would be the perfect time to become one! These Rain Barrels are ready-to-use, and very economically priced.

Also for sale are 30 lb. bags of Eco-Lawn Organic Fertilizer. This fertilizer, which is made primarily from worm castings and doesn't contain any harmful chemicals, can have amazing results on your lawn, including the vigorous growth of organic matter and a deep and fibrous root systems. Vermicompost is good for your lawn, your garden, and for potted plants. And like the Rain Barrels, this fertilizer also helps reduce stormwater runoff. Since this fertilizer is organic, rainwater that comes into contact with it doesn't stand the risk of being contaminated, and is still healthy, even if it eventually becomes part of our county's water supply. The bags cost $ 25.00, but once again, if you are an EAC member the cost is only $ 20.00!

Look for both of these products at the EAC information booth at the Expo!

Dr. Sylvia Earle Speaks on the World of Oceanography

Please join us on April 20 in the Prairie Room in ISU's Bone Student Center at 5:00 pm as we welcome Dr. Sylvia Earle, an icon in the world of Oceanography and Sustainability who has frequently appeared on National Geographic. Dr. Earle also played a significant role in adding ocean exploration in the latest version of Google Earth . Dr. Earle will also do a book signing immediately following her lecture.

If you have an ISU meal plan, you can obtain a ticket at any dining center for a single meal swipe. Want to bring a friend or two? Swipe as many times as needed for an equivalent number of tickets.

If you don't have an ISU meal plan, tickets are $15.25 for ISU members and $15.25 + tax for non ISU members. This event includes a meal by ISU's very own Executive Chef Phil Cade as well as special performances (music and poetry) by some of our most talented students.

Applied Sustainability Event

ISU’s Technology Department is co-sponsoring (with the Town of Normal) a visit from planner and architect Doug Farr as part of Science and Technology Week, on Monday April 13 at 7:30 pm in the Bone Student Center's Old Main Room. He will be discussing his work as a sustainability-focused architect and urban planner. Doug is a national leader on sustainability and the built environment.

His recent book, Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design with Nature, is both an urgent call to action and a comprehensive introduction to "sustainable urbanism"--the emerging and growing design reform movement that combines the creation and enhancement of walkable and diverse places with the need to build green infrastructure and buildings.

Prior to the talk (from 5:30-7pm), Doug will be at Babbitt’s Books on North Street in Uptown Normal for a book signing and conversation hour. Please feel free to attend one or both events! The event are free and open to the public.
