Recycling & Waste Reduction Award
and
World of Difference Award

Each year the Ecology Action Center presents two awards at the Illinois Sustainable Living & Wellness Expo: the McLean County Recycling and Waste Reduction Award, and the World of Difference Award. The awards ceremony for both awards will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at the Illinois Wesleyan University Shirk Center.

The McLean County Recycling and Waste Reduction Award is awarded in the following categories: small business/organization, large business/organization and school. Applicants are judged on innovation, environmental significance and commitment to the programs dealing with recycling and waste production. This year’s winners are:

Bill’s Key and Lock Shop in Uptown Normal receives the small business recycling award. The Shop strives to reduce waste by reusing locks whenever possible and recycles all items. The staff also use energy saving devises throughout the Shop.

Brigham Elementary School Living Green Team recycles paper at the school and develops student leadership skills while engendering environmental responsibility in students and teachers. The efforts of the entire school have significantly reduced what ends up in the landfill.

With the World of Difference Award, the Ecology Action Center recognizes outstanding projects, activities, or individuals in McLean County who promote environmental awareness or conservation of natural resources. Any business, organization, school, project, or individual may be nominated by writing a letter explaining the project’s objective, how it was carried out, and the final results of the project. This year’s winners are:

World of Difference Award

Margaret Hollowell is our person of the year. Margaret has endeavored tirelessly to promote public awareness and appreciation of Central Illinois’ native areas. Among her achievements are restoration projects at Angler’s Lake, Hedge Apple Wood Nature Preserve and Ewing Park, Prairie education projects at public schools and public education through her work with the JWP Audubon Chapter and McLean County Master Gardener Program.

World of Difference Award for a Business

Ornatrix hair salon receives our business award. Owner Trisha Wulf recycles 80-90% of her waste and protects the health of her clients and our water by using ammonia-free, non-toxic hair colorants, low EMF blow dryers and photodegradable retail bags.
